Fashionable soccer moms in Los Angeles have been dying their childrens’ hair to match their own for years. On the East Coast, fashion savvy mamas wear skinny jeans and hipster wear right along with their teenage daughters. On a related note, Zappos, the online retailer known for low priced high fashion, want to take the ‘Mommy and me’ trend to a whole new level. For whatever reason, mothers just seem to love dressing their kids up just like them. First, it was Suri Cruise and her ever present high heels, and now mommies, sons and daughters will be dressed like twins.
Of course, many people have criticized parents for dressing their children like they are adults. This means that Zappos has to work hard to find a balance between fashion forward and age appropriateness. ‘Mommy and me’ fashions are targeted towards new moms in their late 20s to mid 30s and children aged two though six. At some point, designers at Zappos will need to think about how much ‘matching’ they will be able to get away with. For instance, evening gowns and high heeled booties look great on a woman that’s in shape, but it would be a bit strange to see a mother and daughter wearing matching peep toed Louboutins. For the most part, this fashion trend will consist of casual outfits, some swimwear and a few season staples. Fashionable mothers are already placing their pre-orders on the Zappos website in anticipation of all the styles that will be available for the summer.
